This area was one of the key centers of Buddhist civilization in Afghanistan, dating back to the Kushan period (approximately the 2nd or 3rd century CE). During the reign of Emperor Kanishka, Buddhism flourished in the region, and Tangi Darunta was recognized as an important religious and cultural hub. With the spread of Islam, many Buddhist temples and stupas were either abandoned or repurposed.
