Top Dara is one of the important archaeological sites in Afghanistan, holding significant importance in the history and culture of the region.

1- Exact Geographical Location

Top Dara is located to the north of Kabul, near Charikar. This historical site is situated close to high mountains and a lush valley. Top Dara has held strategic importance as a key point along the communication routes between Kabul and other regions of Afghanistan.

2- Geographical Coordinates

Top Dara is located at a latitude of 34.3700° North and a longitude of 69.4050° East.

3- Historical Background

This stupa is a remnant of the great Kushan civilization, and more precisely, it can be traced back to the reign of Emperor Kanishka in the second century CE.

Stupas or "Top" were common terms in ancient Buddhist periods in Kabul and other important regions, retaining their meaning and significance until modern times. The word stupa refers to a Buddhist monument typically consisting of two parts: the Sangharama or temple, and the stupa itself. The Buddhist era, from the 2nd century BCE to the 9th century CE, spanned over 11 centuries, during which the Buddhist tradition flourished in the eastern half of Afghanistan (from the Balkh-Kandahar line toward the east).

4- Architectural Features

The stupa has an approximate height of 15 meters, and the circumference of its Mediterranean-style cylindrical base is about forty meters. Two common circular bands are seen encircling the stupa, and their plasterwork has been well-preserved.

5- Cultural Significance

Top Dara is recognized as one of Afghanistan's cultural treasures. This site not only served as an ancient temple but also remains a cultural and historical symbol for the people of Afghanistan. The historical relics found in this area play a vital role in showcasing the history and civilization of the region.

6- Name of the Discoverer and Year of Discovery

Top Dara has been of interest throughout history, but archaeological excavations in the area began in the late 20th century. In 1960 CE, systematic and formal excavations were initiated to study and restore the artifacts of Top Dara.

As one of Afghanistan’s cultural treasures, Top Dara remains a significant symbol in the memories of the people of this land, and its historical values are crucial for future generations.
